North Carolina Insurance Department Hosts International Burn Conference

The North Carolina Department of Insurance Office of State Fire Marshal and the UNC Healthcare Jaycee Burn Center are the co-hosts of the 2008 World Burn Congress in Raleigh.

Each year more than 500,000 people are treated for burn injuries, and fire-related injuries remain a leading cause of unintentional fatalities in the home.

This year’s World Burn Congress runs Oct. 1-4, and brings together more than 650 members of the burn community including survivors, caregivers, burn professionals and firefighters. It provides attendees the strength to move forward in their recoveries in an environment of support and understanding. For many it is the first opportunity to meet and share with others who have experienced a burn trauma.

The Phoenix Society for Burn Survivors offers support for survivors and provides them with the resources needed for dealing with both the physical and emotional scars of their injuries. One way the Phoenix Society for Burn Survivors offers support is through the annual World Burn Congress, the world’s largest conference dedicated to burn recovery.

Amy Acton, executive director of the Phoenix Society for Burn Survivors, said the World Burn Congress serves as a place of healing and education for burn survivors and as an opportunity to raise awareness of this preventable problem.
