Fire in Kentucky Burns Daniel Boone National Forest

Authorities in central Kentucky say a fire that burned more than 150 acres in Daniel Boone National Forest has been contained.

Forest Fire Management Officer Mitch Gandy says the fire, which is northeast of Slade, is expected to burn 576 acres by the time it burns out.

Because the terrain is too steep and rocky to dig a fire line around the fire, firefighters have gone to natural boundaries such as creeks, hiking trails and the Red River and set fires. Gandy says these are designed to burn toward the core of the fire and create a fire break around it.

The official fire season for the 700,000-acre forest begins Oct. 15. But Gandy says more fires are being seen because of unusually dry conditions.
