Georgia College Building Emptied after Explosion in Lab
Fire officials say a small explosion in a building at Mercer University’s DeKalb County campus led to the evacuation of the building.
DeKalb County fire Capt. Eric Jackson says one person underwent chemical decontamination and was taken to a hospital as a precaution. Jackson said the explosion took place in Mercer’s College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences building off Chamblee-Tucker Road.
“It appears there was some cleaning that was going on utilizing some hydrochloric acid and somewhere in the midst of that there was a reaction that resulted in a small explosion with no fire,” Jackson said.
He said one other person in the laboratory was unharmed.
