Florida Keys Experiencing Motorboat Theft Spree
Thieves have stolen nearly 50 outboard boat motors in the Florida Keys in recent months and police say the crime spree is the work of well-organized professionals.
Monroe County Sheriff’s detectives believe many of the incidents are likely the work of an organized group of thieves from outside the Keys, who appear to be getting help from locals.
Outboard engines with 200 or more horsepower appear to be the most common target.
All the thefts have happened between Big Pine Key and Stock Island since Jan. 1.
