Alabama Jury Awards $3.76 Million in Teen’s Hotel Pool Death

A jury in Alabama has awarded $3.76 million to the family of a 19-year-old who died after an accident in a swimming pool at a Montgomery hotel.

Derrick Marshall, a receiver at Wetumpka High School who had signed with Alabama State University, was attending a family reunion at the King’s Inn, when the accident occurred two years ago. He died several months later.

The Montgomery County Health Department had shut down the pool. The family alleged that hotel employees told them they could use it anyway.

Josh Wright, an attorney for Marshall’s family, says the jury award a strong message to hotels in Alabama.
