Last of Shelters for Georgia Flood Victims Closes

October 9, 2009

The last of eight shelters for flood victims in metro Atlanta has closed its doors.

The shelter at the Cobb Civic Center in Marietta shut down Thursday at 9 a.m. after two weeks of housing hundreds of people whose homes were damaged or destroyed by massive floods on Sept. 21.

Red Cross officials say about 130 people were still at the shelter as of Tuesday night.

Red Cross workers and other emergency officials are scrambling to find places for people staying in the shelter to go once it closes. Some apartment complexes are offering discounted rent and waiving security deposits.

Authorities say 2,862 homes were affected by the floods, with 781 destroyed and 765 having major damage.
