Mobile Gets Federal Grant to Hire 30 Firefighters

The city of Mobile has been awarded a $2.5 million grant to hire 30 new firefighters.

Mobile Fire-Rescue Chief Steve Dean told the Mobile Press-Register the money would be used to pay the salaries and benefits for the firefighters for two years. He said the grant requires the city to keep the new firefighters for another year after that.

City spokeswoman Barbara Drummond said the city needs the new firefighters to staff two yet-to-be opened fire stations that will serve newly annexed areas of the city. One of them is on Airport Boulevard and the other is in Theodore.
