Nicole Floods in North Carolina Take 6 Lives
North Carolina Gov. Beverly Perdue, who declared a state of emergency due to flooding from Tropical Storm Nicole, on Sunday visited Windsor, an eastern town still rebuilding from the flood of Hurricane Floyd in 1991.
The North Carolina State Emergency Response Team said that much of Windsor is expected to remain under water for several days. Over the weekend, the downtown was evacuated.
Thousands in the area lost power and more than 250 people were rescued from flood homes and vehicles, most in Bertie County, according to rescue teams from the Highway Patrol, National Guard and U.S. Coast Guard.
Accidents caused by heavy rains are being blamed for six deaths.
Perdue said the recent flooding is similar to that which occurred in 1999 and that those who elevated their structures when they rebuilt after Floyd were unaffected by the recent flooding from Nicole.
