Alabama School Finding Mold Removal Costly
The cost to remove mold from an old school building in Montgomery, Ala. is going up.
Montgomery County school officials said they’ve had to come up with another $500,000 to fix mold problems at Dozier Elementary School, which is about 40 years old. The total cost of the two-phase project is $2.3 million.
The school system is already facing a multimillion dollar deficit and major budget cuts from the state. It’s having to dig into federal stimulus money to cover the cost.
School Superintendent Barbara Thompson said the school district promised parents they would get the work done and make the school a healthier place for children, so they must fulfill that promise.
Classrooms are being gutted and new heating and air conditioning units are being installed.
