Tennessee Suspends Projects Following Fatal Accident
State transportation officials have suspended bridge construction projects being done by a company involved in a fatal accident in Knoxville.
The Tennessee Department of Transportation in Nashville said Wednesday it has halted work under way by Britton Bridge LLC even though the company already has voluntarily suspended such projects.
According to The Knoxville News Sentinel, an autopsy will be performed on the body of a construction worker killed Tuesday while working on a barge as part of the Henley Bridge dismantling.
Police said the man was hit in the head by a piece of concrete that dislodged from a support beam. State and city officials gave conflicting identities of the man.
Transportation Commissioner John Schroer said officials want to do a “thorough assessment” of safety measures at the projects.
