Twister Response Scaling Back in Alabama
The government says fewer people are seeking help from the April tornadoes that ravaged Alabama, so it’s scaling back its response to the disaster.
Officials said Thursday the disaster recovery centers spread out across the state will no longer be open on Sundays starting this weekend. And six centers located in Blount, Calhoun, Colbert, Etowah, Jefferson and Tuscaloosa counties are closing this week.
The moves leave 21 other centers spread out across the state, and they are still open six days a week.
More than 23,000 people have visited at least one of the centers since they opened May 1. Representatives from the state and federal government staff the centers to explain assistance programs to storm survivors.
