Mississippi County Looks to Add Storm Sirens
Lowndes County is hoping to install 10-15 new storm sirens in a project that is expected to cost between $250,000 and $300,000.
The county currently has 25 tornado sirens. The city of Columbus has another five.
Cindy Lawrence, director of the Columbus-Lowndes Emergency Management Agency, tells The Commercial Dispatch that the county has grown and added new residential areas.
Lawrence says aside from two storm sirens purchased about five years ago, all the current sirens were purchased in the `90s.
Lawrence says some areas can’t hear the sirens. She says there also is not a storm siren near the airport.
She says each siren costs about $20,000 and the county spends about $8,000 annually on maintenance.
