Mississippi City Settles 12th Stun Gun Lawsuit
A federal judge has dismissed Waveland, Miss., and its police department after the city settled a 12th lawsuit over the use of stun guns by officers.
The Sun Herald reports that records show U.S. District Judge Louis Guirola Jr. Guirola signed an order to dismiss the case Oct. 22.
The lawsuit was one of a dozen filed from 2008 to 2012 claiming excessive use of force by Waveland police. Ten lawsuits – including the latest dismissed by Guirola – involved the use of a stun gun.
Of the 12 lawsuits, a judge ruled in favor of defendants in three cases. The city settled six lawsuits and two alleging excessive force by other means.
Waveland police used stun guns from 2006 until 2010, when Mayor David Garcia stopped the practice.
