South Carolina Sinkhole Forces Apartment Building Residents Out
The city of Greer, S.C., has closed an apartment building after a sinkhole opened behind the complex.
Greer spokesman Steve Owens told local media outlets that residents reported the sinkhole behind one of the buildings at the Legacy Crescent Park Apartments shortly before 6 p.m. Monday.
Owens said the city’s engineer and building inspectors found erosion beneath the slab foundation between 1-and 3-feet deep. Owens said the sinkhole left no support on one side of a building in the complex.
Owens says some residents moved into unoccupied apartments at the complex. He did not know how many people were affected.
