Charleston to Spend Millions on Fire Station Upgrades

The City of Charleston, S.C., plans to spend millions of dollars in the next 20 years to upgrade fire stations and build new ones.

Area media outlets report one of the new stations will be built next to the memorial at the site of the Sofa Super Store fire where 9 firefighters died in 2007.

City Council this week gave initial approval to a tax increase to raise about $60 million for public safety building projects during the next 20 years.

Four of the city’s fire stations needing upgrades to withstand hurricanes and earthquakes are in the city’s historic district. The buildings are protected under city historic preservation rules and cannot be torn down but must be renovated.
