Nev. Rider Motorcycle Safety Program Kicks Off Motorcycle Awareness Campaign

The Office of Traffic Safety’s Nevada Rider Motorcycle Safety Program announced the launch of a public education campaign to heighten the awareness of the increasing numbers of motorcyclists on Nevada’s roadways.

Using billboards in Las Vegas, Reno and Elko, the campaign provides both drivers and motorcyclists a high impact, visual look at how motorcyclists and vehicles can safely share the road.

Endorsed by Governor Guinn via a Governor’s proclamation, the May campaign is titled “Watch for Motorcyclists: They Can Come Out of the Blue.” The billboard and poster promotion encourages motor vehicle drivers to be cautious and watch out for motorcyclists, especially during their seasonal return to Nevada’s streets and highways.

The campaign is also intended to reduce the number of accidents, injuries and fatalities associated with motorcycling by encouraging motorcycle operators to participate in rider education programs, wear the proper apparel, don’t drink and ride and operate their vehicle defensively according to the rules of the road.

In 2003, 25 motorcyclists were killed in Nevada. To date in 2004, there have been 13 motorcycle rider fatalities in the state.
