Salmonella Leads to Tuna Recall
An outbreak of salmonella on Oahu, Hawaii led to a voluntary recall of yellowfin tuna, or ahi, by at least one island distributor.
The Food and Drug Administration is investigating source of the outbreak.
Choyce Products has announced it’s voluntarily destroying 11,000 pounds of previously frozen ahi from a shipment that tested positive for a rare form of salmonella.
But the company acknowledges that another 5,000 pounds from the shipment was sold to five businesses and it’s not clear whether any of that got to consumers.
The state Health Department is investigating three recent cases of a rare strain of salmonella that can be found in raw ahi. Salmonella is killed with cooking.
