Family of Drowned Kayaker Seeks $4 million

The family of a California woman who drowned when her kayak capsized in the Rogue River is seeking $4 million in damages from a Hood River, Ore.-based rafting company.

The lawsuit in Multnomah County Circuit Court claims that Echo River Trips was negligent in providing a kayak and inadequate instruction to Cynthia Lee Von Tungeln and allowing and encouraging her to proceed through dangerous rapids without warning.

The Mail Tribune in Medford said a kayak containing the 52-year-old Von Tungeln of Clairmont, Calif., and another woman capsized June 27 at an area known as the Picket Fence in the tricky Blossom Bar rapids.

Both wore life vests but strong currents pinned her against the rocks. Her body wasn’t recovered for more than a week.
