Salvage Effort Ends on Sunken Vessel in Alaska
State environmental authorities say no additional action will be taken to recover fuel spilled from a fishing boat that sank in Slocum Bay 50 miles north of Sitka, Alaska.
The Evening Star capsized and sank Aug. 2.
The fishing boat came to rest in 390 feet of water, tangled in its own seine net, on a ledge above a further drop to 600 feet.
An insurance company determined the vessel could not be salvaged.
The ship had carried about 1,000 gallons of diesel fuel and other petroleum.
Department of Environmental Conservation officials said Friday most fuel on board had been released.
