2 Insurers Sue U.S. Army for Utah Wildfire

Two insurers are suing the U.S. Army for a wildfire sparked by live fire at Camp Williams that torched three houses in the Salt Lake City suburb of Herriman.

The Deseret News reports that State Farm and Farmers Insurance are seeking to recover $1.3 million the insurers paid in property claims for the September 2010 fire.

The lawsuit was filed Tuesday in federal court in Salt Lake City.

The Utah National Guard says it paid some claims directly to homeowners for the so-called Machine Gun Fire, started by live-fire training on Camp Williams. It consumed 4,300 acres in the foothills around Herriman and forced an evacuation.

Farmers Insurance is seeking $1.1 million in reimbursement, while State Farm wants $216,500.
