PIANY Endorses Sen. Bruno’s Support for Tort Reform
The Professional Insurance Agents of New York State Inc. praised Sen. Majority Leader Joseph Bruno for his comments at the Crain’s Breakfast Forum, urging comprehensive tort reform for New York state. The New York City Partnership presented the forum at the Sheraton New York Hotel.
“We applaud Senator Bruno for acknowledging the need to reduce skyrocketing litigation costs that translate into millions of dollars in premium every year for New York insurance consumers,” PIANY president David Isenberg commented. “There must be an end to the extraordinary settlements that benefit a few interests in the legal profession and hurt the rest of us in the long run.”
The bulletin noted that the “PIANY has worked ardently to enact tort reform to the state’s labor laws, specifically New York’s unique ‘scaffolding act,’ known as sections 240 and 241, which make an employer totally responsible for any injury suffered by a worker in a fall, no matter how reckless the worker may have been.”
“The Senator’s commentary couldn’t have come at a more critical time,” Isenberg noted.
