Records: UConn Admits Violating Asbestos Rules

University of Connecticut records show the school violated federal asbestos-handling rules when workers discarded construction materials during renovations in President Michael Hogan’s office.

The Hartford Courant reported in Tuesday’s editions that documents show UConn officials acknowledged the workers violated the rules while replacing the floor, which had a material attached underneath that contained asbestos.

UConn officials say there was only a tiny amount of asbestos and several changes are in place after an internal investigation.

The fire-resistant material, often used as insulation, can cause cancer when inhaled.

The results of health screenings of six UConn employees who worked on the project that began in August haven’t been released.
