Bayern Munich Defender Breno Under Arson Probe
Bayern Munich defender Breno is the target of an arson investigation following a fire that gutted his house earlier this week.
The Bundesliga club said it was not aware of the investigation and that the player has been given a lawyer.
“We are surprised by the new situation that Breno is under investigation. Since we have no other information, we can’t make any further comment,” the club said.
The Munich Prosecutor’s office said the 21-year-old player was suspected of “grave arson” in the case, according to the German news agency dapd.
Police initially said the Brazilian managed to flee from his burning house in a leafy Munich suburb shortly after midnight Tuesday. He was treated in a hospital for smoke inhalation as a precaution and was not seriously injured.
The fire gutted the house and caused up to (euro) 1.5 million ($2.05 million) worth of damage.
Breno was alone in the house at the time.
Bayern said it would continue to take care of Breno and his family.
