Subway Crash in Sao Paulo Injures 33
One subway train has crashed into the back of another in Brazil’s largest city, injuring 33. Two people are in critical condition with head injuries.
Sao Paulo’s fire department says one of the trains had stopped between two busy commuter stations.
The Metro company says in a Wednesday statement it’s investigating the crash but hadn’t determined a cause.
But company chief Peter Walker tells Globo TV a mechanical failure in a braking system is suspected. Phone and email messages left with the Metro company were not returned.
Sao Paulo’s subway system serves 2.7 million people per day. The line where the crash occurred is the busiest, with 1.1 million passengers each day.
Service on the line was restored about five hours after the crash.
