1 Dead in Austrian Pileup With up to 100 Vehicles
A fire department official says up to 100 vehicles have collided on a snow-slicked stretch of an Austrian highway, leaving one person dead.
Franz Resperger of the Lower Austrian fire department says the accident occurred late Tuesday about 60 kilometers (nearly 40 miles) west of Vienna. The string of damaged vehicles stretched more than 2 kilometers (1.2 miles).
State broadcaster ORF says crews from six regional fire departments are at the scene, along with several ambulances and an emergency services helicopter. Several people have been injured in the pileup.
The three west-bound lanes of the A-1 highway were closed to traffic after the accident.
