A new version of a classic muscle car sits well on top of the list of the nation’s most stolen vehicles.

The Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 is America’s most-stolen vehicle, according to the Highway Loss Data Institute.

The Camaro ZL1 and the regular Camaro account for two-of-five model year 2022-24 vehicles that were the most stolen, and according to the HLDI’s analysis, the Camaro ZL1 had a whole-vehicle theft rate 39 times the average for all vehicles relative to its numbers on the roads.

The frequency of whole-vehicle theft claims for the standard Camaro was 13 times as high as the average. Pickup trucks and other expensive or high-horsepower models made up much of the list of the top 20 vehicles with the highest claim frequencies for whole-vehicle theft, the analysis shows.

There have been reports that thieves have been able to clone the FOB key code for newer Camaros by accessing the on-board ports that technicians use to retrieve diagnostic codes. In March, General Motors launched a service campaign aimed at reducing theft risk for 2020-24 Camaro models, enabling owners to bring their vehicles to dealerships for a free software update.

On the other side of the road, the 20 least-stolen vehicles include eight electric vehicles and two plug-in hybrids, all of which have whole-vehicle theft claim frequencies more than 85% lower than the all-vehicle average. HLDI studies have showed that electric vehicles are likely to be garaged or parked near buildings to facilitate charging, making them less attractive to thieves.
