Former Alabama Insurance Agent Sentenced to 12 Years
A judge has sentenced the former owner of an Oxford, Alabama insurance agency to 12 years in prison for making some customers believe he was selling them policies when he wasn’t.
Circuit Court Judge Malcolm Street also ordered Mitchell W. Hurt, former president of Howell-Hurt Insurance Co., to pay $309,234 in restitution to 17 former clients, including more than $50,000 to two.
Hurt pleaded guilty to 14 counts of property theft in late November. He was indicted June 2.
Street said Tuesday that three former clients did not request restitution — Consolidated Publishing (The Anniston Star), the Calhoun County YMCA and ERA King Realty.
Hurt’s wife, Patricia Hurt, was also arrested last June and charged in relation to the cases. She posted a $70,000 bond and is awaiting a trial date
