North Carolina Woman Defrauds Lienholder After Auto Accident

Victoria White was arrested and charged with one count of obtaining property by false pretense, according to an announcement by North Carolina Insurance Commissioner Wayne Goodwin.

Department of Insurance criminal investigators allege that White filed a claim with Southern General Insurance on June 6, 2013, for damage to her 2005 PT Cruiser as the result of an auto accident. Southern General settled the claim for vehicle repairs with a check for $2,246.84 made out to White and the lien holder, Darin Groom Auto Sales.

Darin Groom Auto Sales repossessed the vehicle on June 10, 2013, and contacted Southern General regarding the vehicle damage. The insurance company informed the dealer that the check had been endorsed by White and Darin Groom Auto Sales, and had been cashed. The auto dealership claims that they neither endorsed the check nor received the funds for the vehicle repair. Investigators allege that White retained the funds for her own personal use.

White was arrested with the assistance of the Gaston County Sheriff’s Office on Feb. 20 and placed under a $2,500 bond.
