Utah Rockslide Causes Highway Crashes

The Utah Highway Patrol says a nighttime rockslide sent boulders onto the highway about an hour north of Salt Lake City, causing six crashes.

Utah Highway Patrol Sgt. Marykaye Lucas tells KSL-TV only minor injuries were reported.

The slide occurred 10 p.m. Friday, closing a stretch of Route 89 between Mantua and Brigham City. People in three of the six accidents reported the minor injuries.

Officers say one boulder in the road was the size of a sedan and another was slightly smaller.

Investigators say they suspect that debris from the slide caused most of the accidents. Lucas said she didn’t know if the boulders struck or ran over any cars.

Lucas says heavy rainfall loosened the rock and officials have closed the road until further notice.
