Pieces of Arizona’s London Bridge Recovered After Crash
Divers have recovered nearly 30 pieces of Lake Havasu City’s London Bridge that were knocked into the Bridgewater Channel by a truck accident last month.
City officials say 18 balusters and eight top rail pieces have been taken to a storage yard with only two of the balusters in unbroken condition.
Larger pieces that weigh up to 500 pounds are expected be recovered later with a crane.
After the Dec. 12 accident, city workers temporarily replaced 40 feet of granite railing with plywood and barricades. Permanent repairs may take months because the city has to put the project up for bid.
Lake Havasu City founder Robert McCulloch bought the bridge from the city of London in 1968 for approximately $2 million. It was brought piece by piece to Lake Havasu.
