Minot, N.D., Dikes’ Flood Certification Could Take 2 Years
The public works director for Minot N.D., says crews are working to have the city’s dikes certified for 100-year flood protection, but the process could take two years.
The Federal Emergency Management Agency is requiring the certification for the dikes, which were built in the 1970s. Without certification, Minot residents could be required to buy flood insurance if they have a mortgage.
Public Works Director Alan Walter says the city was told by an engineer that the certification process likely will take two years.
The Army Corps of Engineers inspects Minot’s dikes every year. It’s found them to be in good shape.
