Unable to Buy Insurance, Fire Station in Louisiana Forced to Move
Members of the volunteer fire department in the Terrebonne Parish town of Dularge say financial pressures are forcing them to abandon their hurricane-ravaged central fire station.
The building has flooded twice, during Hurricane Rita in 2005 and Hurricane Ike in 2008. Fire chief Quint Liner says the department’s insurance company won’t insure any more buildings on that property.
The expected move brings new worries: The new fire station would put firefighters on the north side of a Terrebonne Parish canal that has what local officials say is an unreliable mechanical bridge. Liner and others say they worry about the possible effects the move would have on rural areas south of the canal.
